Yes, but how did it Happen?? The mystery deepens 25/07/09
I rarely listen to word of mouth about films.
After all, one man's Citizen Kane is another man's Superman IV:The Quest for Peace.
But, this time, I had to see for myself, as word as mouth was just SO BAD.
M. Night. Shyamalan is a curiosity of a filmmaker. I really liked The Sixth Sense. It was a very well put together little film, with a great twist, that sadly didn't stay secret for me as some berk at work told be about it when it came out, thus, the big reveal was something I knew was coming. Indestructible was a really great idea, and half of a really good film. I thought it could have been a hell of a lot better, but I did admire the fact that it stuck to its principals. Most other films with a central conceit about a real superhero would lose control and turn into just another superhero film, like that god awful Will Smith film "Hancock." But, Unbreakable just kept it very low key and in the end I thought, was more rewarding to the viewer.
I enjoyed Signs too, I really enjoyed the tension leading all the way to the end, and the scene with the alien locked in the larder is very good. But, the end is utter toss, sadly.
The Village is where I think he lost the plot, literally. This was a massive load of shit. It started off as a good idea, but slowly (oh, very slowly) turned into a really boring film with such a, "Oh, fuck off!!" Twist.
I have never watched "Lady in the Water" and I don't think I will ever feel the compunction to. It does look quite wank though, so I don't think I will ever bother. Many people were unhappy at the time that Shyamalan cast himself as one of the main parts, that eventually saves the day, he also wrote a scene in which a critic is eaten. Not very subtle.
When I heard about "The Happening" I knew that I had to break with tradition. I had to watch it.
I had heard that it was so bad, it was good. But, not just good, amazingly funny good.
It is not a comedy.
If you have not seen it. You simply must.
The plot (?) revolves around plants releasing toxins into the air that make humans kill themselves. Yes, that is what I said. So, people start offing themselves in the most ridiculous ways. If you thought the lawnmower scene in Maximum Overdrive was bad, just you wait.
Mark Whalberg plays a man (Twonk) who loves science so much he would like to put his hand down its blouse. He also left his acting at home. At one point he speaks to a plant and it out acts him.
This film makes no sense and is so full of holes you could drain spaghetti with it.
So many people behave in ways that people just would not in situations such as the world ending. At one point a man leaves his daughter behind with his best friend and a woman he hates, to go and find his wife as the car he is getting a lift with only has one space. Would he really leave his ONLY daughter behind? No M. Night Shyamalan, I don't think he would. I could go on for hours about all the scenes in this film that make no sense, but I really can't be bothered, just watch and see for yourself just how bad this film is.
So, in conclusion, it is utter shit, but so funny, as Agony Booth have spotted in the below video and I think their video says more than words ever can.
