It's The End Of The World As I Know It And I feel fine 05/04/09
I had a tragedy occur today. An old friend died. A friend that has been there for me since I don't know when. We shared laughter, we shared tears, we grew up together and we learnt together. But, as with everything, our friendship ended and now I am hollow, empty and lost at sea. I had to say goodbye to some of my best friends.
Yes, that's right. I finished season 5 of The Wire tonight and I just don't know how I will go on. The quest to know what will happen next has finished. All loose ends tied and all journeys complete.
Was it worth it? Was it worth all my time?
Hell yes.
I am sure that you have all heard that The Wire is good and I am sure you have all been bored by someone telling you all about it. But, believe the hype. This show is a roller coaster and just doesn't give you a minute to think about anything else. You care for these people, in fact in some cases you care far too much and are left bereft when they are not on the screen.
It is just so much better than anything else of its kind. people will often mention CSI or something like that, but they are always so glossed and will usually be tied up by the end. The Wire on the other hand, reflects real life in a staggering way. The good guy doesn't always win and life goes on no matter who goes away and someone will always replace a downed captain.
Each season is drastically better than the last (Save for season 3 which in my opinion is the weakest, but still amazing)and the assembled cast, no matter how minor or major, are just so perfect, so much so that once the obsession takes hold you simply forget you are watching actors playing parts, they are family. They are so good that when you see them out of charector in interviews and the like, it is perterbing.
Thankfuly, the BBC are now showing this from the beginning on BBC2 at 11.20pm, which although good that it is on, is a terrible time to show it. This is repeating the mistakes they made with Seinfeld and Larry Sanders, putting them on so late that no one watched them. But this, in the words of Lester Freeman, is a start. Hopefully people will watch and see how cop shows can and should be made. Thoughtfully, with care and attention given to every word uttered.
I leave you with a clip from season 1. This is one of my favourite scenes in which Bunk and McNulty arrive at the scene of a crime and realise that this just isn't any normal murder case.
Don't just take it from me, there are other fans out there:
I was saddened to see the tabloids on Sunday referring to Jade Goody as a "princess" at her funeral. Whilst the hypocrisy of the tabloids still fills me with vitriol, the irony of her funeral being shown on a giant screen outside the church wasn't lost on me either. There certainly seems to be a wealth of people who need to grieve about this, but, let's hope they get a proper hobby soon.
I preferred Bird on a Wire. Comment By: Melon Gibson, 06 Apr 2009, Rating: 5/5
The Wire is good, but do they really need to swear so much? I mean, it's not clever and is a bad example to others. Comment By: Chris., 06 Apr 2009, Rating: 5/5
