British television "lacks the high end of drama", The Wire star Dominic West has said. The British actor, 39, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme "we do costume drama brilliantly" but that UK TV was lacking shows like US drama The Wire.
He is spot on.
It seems that every time we produce a new drama serial it is Dickens, Austin or the like.
American TV and HBO especially has a frighteningly good output of TV drama.
I recently watched Band of Brothers and whilst I enjoyed it immensely, it made me wish that our channels would take a chance and produce something similar. We have some marvellous war stories that we could put on the small screen. But, we would rather see "Demons" apparantly or yet another hideous season of Dr. Fucking Who (To give him his full name) with Jonny Greenwood.
The closest thing we have had to innovative and entertaining drama was Life on Mars. That was an amazing programme with a fantastic cast and gripping until its wonderful end. You know it was good as the yanks have remade it.
We have some amazing actors who are forced to either go to the US to make their mark, or appear in yet another version of Pride and Prejudice or Oliver Twist.
It just isnt good enough and quite frankly, our TV should be ashamed.
Poor Michael Owen. We lose 2 strikers (and lame another) and Darren Bent is called up. Michael Owen appears to officially be on the scrap heap. Whilst he claims he is not injury prone, he clearly is these days and those injuries have obviously taken away one of the major factors of his game, his pace. Capello obviously favours pace over finishing, which is fair enough when Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard are in this kind of form, but I would always like Owen in my corner, even if he comes on as a late sub.
If there is one thing that Michael Owen has always done, that's prove people wrong, especially when he is written off.

| Dominic West can fuck right off. When the US starts producing quality drama like Rosemary and Thyme, Jonathan Creek and Hetty Wainthrop Investigates then he can start to get all high and mighty. The Wire is good but lacks the gritty realism of The Bill. Style over substance. Comment By: Frankie Jackson, 31 Mar 2009, Rating: 3/5 |
