| As a nation. We are prone to wild gestures of patriotism, insane levels of self righteousness and worst of all, knee jerk reactions. But, this is not our fault. We are guided in the dark by the candle of the tabloids. People who don't have opinions pick up the paper, read it and suddenly think, "Yes, I think immigrants should be hanged from lampposts, single mothers are evil and isn't it odd that random shapes appearing on crisps look like an ill conceived idea of Jesus's appearance?"
The worst aspect of the media, and the one thing I am most ashamed of, is their total and utter unashamed hypocrisy. I touched on this in my last blog, but it really gets me down. Take the whole Diana affair. They follow her everywhere she goes, they try and expose her at every turn by taking extreme measures to capture pictures of her on a beach, at the gym, in a car, in a plane, on a boat and generally doing nothing. Then, one night, she is killed and the photos were even snapped of her lying in a mashed up car. I don't know his name, but that fat Australian utter prick with the stupid hair who runs some Paparazzi agency said in a documentary about her death that he had the photos of her in the tunnel and sold them to a newspaper, who had to sit on them in the end once news had emerged that she was dying. Doubtless, this same newspaper got on the bandwagon about the paparazzi giving celebrities more peace and not just following them for the sake of it. Sadly, in the years that have followed Diana's death, the Paparazzi has become worse. Lying in gutters to get a picture of some girls pants, paying through the nose for a picture of Britney Spears in an ambulance and antagonising stars who have a reputation just to get a rise out of them and a picture. You can only imagine what would have happened had Diana been alive today. It is almost like if you are famous, you are fair game to have your social life ruined by someone with a camera following you everywhere, awaiting that moment in which you switch off. It isn't a job, it's stalking. The problem is, people love it. People buy Heat and the like just to see a picture of Charlotte Church going to Sainsburys and read about how even though she is heavily pregnant, she is apparently fat. This whole Jade Goody mess is a different kettle of fish however. She has to be the first person to completely open the doors to this kind of harassment, even going to the extreme to profit from her own demise and have a magazine publish her tribute whilst she was still alive. There is actually talk of her funeral being televised, which to me, seems ludicrous. I have seen how sensitive an issue it is and how it has divided opinion. Some people, though understandable that cancer is not something you would wish on anyone, find the whole affair just the worst kind of knee jerk reaction imaginable, a seemingly shared sense of mourning for someone who has been raised to martyr status for simply succumbing to a terrible disease, and whilst raising awareness for screenings, will sadly, only leave an epitaph of hysteria and over coverage. I felt that the whole saga could have been handled with more dignity and respect towards other sufferers of the disease who have been unable to profit from their suffering. In the weeks leading up to Jade's death, Wendy Richards passed away. Although everyone knew she was ill, she passed away without any fanfare or hysteria. The simple answer for why the Jade Goody affair has become so distasteful, is Max Clifford, a man so evil, exploitative and parastic that it defies explanation. Follow Ted (MrJohnRain) on Twitter
