Or, in the jeans

22/03/09
What a splendid weekend. I awoke early on Saturday morning (too funning early if you ask me) to have my driving lesson with my child driving instructor. We drove around in the sun, I negotiated a few tricky manoeuvres such as 3 point turns and right turn only junctions. I was much better apparently, he was still sure I was the best he has ever seen and wanted to take my midicloriens count. Apparently only master Yoda is as good at these manoeuvres.

When I returned home, I drove my lovely wife and I to Littlehampton's West Beach with a pre-prepared picnic. It was only when we arrived that we realised that neither of us had brought any money for the pay an display. After the inevitable annoyance I stood by the pay and display machine hoping that some kind soul leaving the car park would give me their ticket. After a few cars went passed I realised that I was obviously out of luck. I began to walk back to the car and nick something when some bastard who went to the machine after me stole my thunder. He was fumbling with loose change at the machine, suddenly a car pulled up and offered him their ticket as they were leaving, bastards!! I was very angry, as you can imagine. A normal man would have been beaten by this, but I went back to see if any other kind soul could assist. Sadly, no one did. I was about to leave and curse my luck, but no machine would beat me. I thought I would check to see if any tickets had been left behind any tickets, no luck. I then decided to take the last option, had anyone left any change in the slot? Surely only a tramp would check that? Nope. I checked and my luck was in. I at first presumed it would be a ten pence piece. Not the sixty pence we needed to enjoy the sandy paradise. I pulled out the coin, and much to my utter surprise, it was a pound. Lady Luck had my back after all! We enjoyed the lovely sun and ate a few sandwiches and drank tea. This is living.

In the afternoon we drove into Worthing town to see if my keep fit regime has been paying off. I was on a mission to buy some jeans. Oh, imagine my feeling of liberation and happiness when the size I had been targeting was achieved. I was able to walk into a shop, hold my head high and buy a pair of jeans that until recently, were out of bounds as I was rotund to say the least. I was a lard bucket. But now, I am a pair of jeans buying mother fucker! I returned home and laughed to myself as I popped them on, they fit like a, well, like a pair jeans should, not a glove.

We also bought more Wire, which are now obsessed with in much the same way we were with The Sopranos. I can not believe how good this programme is, I just do not want to understate how amazing it is. Incredibly written, acted and filmed. It is like the best cop movie you could ever imagine stretched out over 12 episodes. I can now understand Charlie Brooker and Andrew Collins' obsession. It is a work of art.

Talking of Andrew Collins, I also managed to secure tickets to the Collings and Herrin pod cast that is happening at the Duke of York's Cinema in Brighton on May 28th. If you have not ever listened to their weekly podcast, I suggest you get up to date with the 55 episodes thus far, it is a very funny podcast and really makes my journeys to work no big deal. They discuss the week in news and review the papers, but it is much more than that. Collins has a real homely charm and Herring has just got such a mischevious charm about him, he will often behave in the most childish way possible. Such as, when they were discussing a story about a tortoise having been operated on and wrapped in a bandage, Herring suggested having sex with the wound, and also, when when Barabbas was released over Christ, Herring speculated if Barabbas was initially arrested for being a bummer. Subsequently, Barabbas's Wikipedia page was updated accordingly and each time it was removed, someone would add it once more. It is a his real persona and obviously taps in to the character/role he would play during the Lee & Herring days, so it is nice to hear him act in that way again. To think that I will now be in the audience for one is a really exciting thought!

Ran another mile and a half today. It was very hard, the sun was hot and the seafront was full of berks. I don't mind though, I have a new target for jeans to achieve. I hope to hit it by summer. So I can kick sand in the face of a fat or wimp child.

Jade Goody died today. She was our new candle in the wind, sadly extinguished. I look forward to the tabloids going totally over the top about her death in much the same way they did about her bullying on television.

The content is based mainly on an analysis and critique of that week's media coverage as well as ginger beer-related discussion. It is light in tone, but often veers into very dark humorous digressions. They describe their work as a "sideways look at the news." There are frequent uses of strong language and it was described by a review in the times as not suitable for 'sensitive souls'. One of their more frequent topics is the writings of the Sun newspaper columnist Jon Gaunt. They have often made humour out of Gaunt's obesity and right-wing views, though these two factors are seen as merely correlative and not causal. Other running jokes focus upon Collins's aural resemblance to Mr Bean; Herring's dieting and fitness regimen; rival and more successful podcasters, such as Adam and Joe; and Herring's relative failure, both critically and comercially, when compared to his erstwhile partner Stewart Lee.

An oft repeated running joke between the two alludes to the fact that they are colleagues and categorically not friends. Collins has stated this in a number of blog entries, deliberately using phrases where the term 'colleague' is not entirely appropriate e.g. "

The Collings and Herrin podcast is a podcast produced by Andrew Collins and Richard Herring, which is made for and hosted by the British Comedy Guide. Herring has a habit of misspelling people's names for comic effect and it was for this reason that the podcast was named in the way it was.

Shut up Rob.
Comment By: The Toaster, 22 Mar 2009, Rating: 5/5

I suspected as much. The mention of the Collings and Herrin pod cast... That has to be a 'g' he's missed off the end there? There can't be both a 'Herrin' and a 'Herring' can there?
Comment By: Rob Sinton, 22 Mar 2009, Rating: 5/5

Not sure on that one Rob. If I had to put money on it then I would have to chance it as a mistake.
Comment By: The Toaster, 22 Mar 2009, Rating: 5/5

I see. Fair enough. He goes on to talk about Barrabas, but then mentions the Wikipedia page of someone called 'Barnabas'. A different person or another mistake?
Comment By: Rob Sinton, 22 Mar 2009, Rating: 5/5

He meant to write driving lesson, not driving test. It was an honest mistake.
Comment By: The Toaster, 22 Mar 2009, Rating: 5/5
