We are unique in the modern world, that we can travel a short distance, sit in a dark small room with other people, and watch a moving image.
Not only that, but we can pay well over the odds for popped corn, sweets and cups of drinks that are so big you cant even fit them in the cup holders. Yes, we are a lucky breed. But last night, I was luckier (Well, stupid as I paid more)

Last night we went to see Watchmen at my local Cineplex. When queuing for my tickets I noticed that the "VIP" showing of Watchmen was still available. So, I stepped up to the ticket man and said, "Two VIP tickets for Watchmen please, my good man." The room hushed, the ticket issuer looked nervous. But I simply tipped my top hat to the assembled masses and they all seemed to relax.

OK, that isn't true. in fact, not much of that is true, I booked my tickets a week ago, I picked them up and then in a moment of weakness, upgraded them to VIP.

But what is the VIP section I hear you ask? Well, you walk upstairs and wait by the bar. Then a big bearded man comes out and asks if you want a beer or anything else (see, already you are important) We declined as we had smuggled bottles of water and mints in. We then were shown into our VIP box. Which consisted of a 10 seater private room that is positioned at the back of the theatre with a glass screen looking out onto the room. I can only assume that the glass is tinted as no one looked in, it was a bit like the cinema screen and all the people in the room had committed a crime and we had to pick them out behind our secret glass. The seats were much bigger and we had our own table beside them. The big hairy man then showed us that we had our own volume control, he then said that we had our own phone too, we could call him and get him to get us stuff. I contemplated asking if I could wee on him to save me leaving the room, but I thought it would be in bad taste.

It would have been perfect had it not been for the fact that 2 more VIPs turned up, but it didn't matter, they were well behaved and the 4 of us sat, sharing the trailers and the darkness in our own VIP room. This IS the life.

So, what was the film like?

I enjoyed it. I liked the style, I really liked the visuals and I liked the fact that the comic book feel is intact, like you are watching a living and breathing comic book. You can almost smell the air. But, I didn't care very much for a few of the characters and the actors who played them. I could have done without everyone, save Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan. Their back stories and screen time was always welcome, more so than a bored owl and a strumpet in tights.

It felt like it had been made by someone who loved the source material so much, they could not remove themselves enough to trim unnecessary scenes. There were quite a few moments that were a struggle to get through and made me wish I was looking at them in the deleted scenes of the DVD.

It also contains quite possibly the most cheesy sex scene ever filmed and quite possibly the strangest Richard Nixon make up, complete with over extended rubber penis nose. But, saying that, if you like seeing a penis, you will enjoy this film as there is quite often one on display.

The violence is intact and quite brutal at times, so that should please fans of the source material.

On the whole though, there was enough to make me want to see it again and I am sure I will be buying it come Blu Ray day, but, it just didn't flick all of my switches. Rorschach is clearly the best character in it though and would have loved a film just based on him.

Clocking in at 2 hours and 45 minutes, it can be a bit of a slog at times. I can imagine that if you saw this in a busy cinema with those kind of mindless idiots that get bored during film credits, they will get really bored and restless in this, so make sure you pick your times carefully.

Talking of our disenchanted youth, I saw a fine set of young go-getters on the way home. Dressed in their usual uniforms of track suits, hoods and a way of walking like they have just evolved. Sat on a bench they eyed up my train opposite, then, one of them stood, took one last puff on his fag and flicked it at the train window in the next carriage from mine. Yea, he looked really hard and tough. I fucking hate kids like that. I am not saying they are a new phenomenon, they have always been about, but my god, they are fucking idiots.

I didn't spot any of the characters who'd actually had their white face makeup painted over their moustache.
