When I was little, I liked to draw. I liked it so much that when I grew up I went to Art College and continue to draw to this day. The only difference to when I was young is that these days my scribbles seem to be of cocks on other peoples belongings, such as a letter or a calendar. When I was growing up, drawing was my main love, my dad even built me a wall fixed drawing easel, I would sit there for hours making my own comic books. Then, at art college I drew people, fruit, naked people and more comic books. Even today, I draw the pathetically puerile pictures on this website. This is all due to one man. Tony Hart.
My driving ambition when I was a kid, was to get one of my drawings on "The Gallery" on Take Hart and Hartbeat. Tony Hart was a god to me, what he couldn't do with a sponge and a small plate of paint, is not worth knowing. He just seemed to have the amazing ability to create with anything he could get his hands on.
He also had a lot to put up with. Mr. Bennett was a supposed comic releif and was the caretaker. When I was young I thought he was hilarious. Looking back, I think he was a bit of a cock. never mind though, at least Morph was fun, right?
I never liked Morph, he was a pain in the arse. I much preferred Chas, at least he was fucking miserable, had some balls, took no shit and was generally out for himself. Grandmorph was annoying though, he was a walking advert for clay euthanasia. As for that Nailbrush dog? Well, that was just bollocks, clearly. But, they were simple times.
I always felt that Tony Hart was one of the main people that got me interested and excited about art, creating things and generally expressing myself. I watched every episode of Hart Beat and was also as excited about Rolf's Cartoon time, in which he would sit at a drawing board and show you how to draw the very cartoon characters he was about to present, genius. He also did Rolf's Cartoon Club, which was equally as awesome. I always wanted to have a go at doing the stop motion film each team would do for the end, and was secretly hoping that art college would be one giant Rolf's Cartoon Club or Hart Beat, which, I suppose in a way it was.
But it was always Tony Hart for me. I would often think of him when I had to undertake any work at college, and would often imagine my creation being filmed with his gentle voice narrating my every move.
Tony Hart really was an institution and it was a real shame when Hart Beat finished in 1993. It is also a real shame that Tony Hart died this weekend and I for one, will remember fondly every picture, drawing, painting and collage he made before my wide open eyes.
Today's generation have the never ageing Neil Buchanan, who is clearly powered by black magic, but it isn't the same. They don't have that ever caring, gentle and majestic figure in their life. Painting worlds from nothing before them. They just have a scouser making ariel pictures from someones washing line, not really the same thing.
Rest in peace Mr. Hart.
On a side note, one of the assistants from Hart Beat was a teacher when I got to Art College, so, I felt that in a small way, every picture of mine she saw, I had made it into the Gallery.
I'm still yet to find a material that the Tony Hart scissors can cut. Comment By: Norbit, 18 Jan 2009, Rating: 5/5
