| If more proof were needed that the world is mainly made up of fucking idiots, X Factor is it. Alexandra Burke apparently won and in doing so performed a cover of the Leonard Cohen song "Hallelujah". Whilst I wouldn't usually give a flying fuck about who wins X Factor, this year I am getting really pissed off with people's reactions.
I keep seeing people joining a group on Facebook to "Get Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah to number one!" This would be like making a Facebook group to get Gareth Gates's Suspicious Minds to number one!? Don't get me wrong, I do admire the sentiment, this new version is fucking terrible and saturated, as most new over produced X Factor type shit is, credit were credit is due. Leonard Cohen should be getting the credit and backing for this song, which is undoubtedly a classic and whilst beautifully performed by Jeff Buckley, the fact remains, it isn't his song! Wiki says : "Hallelujah" was originally written and composed over the course of a year, and is said to have been a frustrating and difficult process for Cohen. Cohen says he wrote at least eighty verses, discarding most of them in the process of crafting the song. Cohen is quoted as saying: “ I filled two notebooks and I remember being in the Royalton Hotel [in New York], on the carpet in my underwear, banging my head on the floor and saying, 'I can't finish this song." Cohen first recorded the song at Quadrasonic Sound, New York in June 1984, working with producer John Lissauer. The next recording of this song by Leonard Cohen was captured live in Austin, Texas on October 31, 1988 with production by Leanne Ungar and Bob Metzger. What needs to be asked is, who needs the money and acclaim more? Jeff Buckley (Who releases more albums now dead than he did when he was alive) or poor Leonard Cohen, who isn't have the best of times financially? I know where I would vote. This is yet another example in a long line of people being stupid and using Facebook to promote their glaring stupidity. Still, at least Cohen will make some cash out of this eventually, which is good news I suppose. I am just really fed up of people like Simon Cowell and the like cherry picking old and classic songs for his stable of twats to butcher and ruin. If these people really do have the "X Factor" (whatever the fuck that means) they should each write a song and let the public judge them on that. But, it would seem that the "X Factor" just means that they can hold a note and look pretty. I thought that we were passed all that now, but obviously, Mr. Cowell likes easy money and if there is one thing that those Levi's adverts of the 1980's proved is that if a song was a hit in the past it will be a hit now. This is why I hate the world I live in. The one piece of good news I heard today is that Ernie Wise is getting his own statue. About time too. I always felt sorry for little Ern, after Eric died he truly became the forgotten man, which is a great shame, as I always enjoyed his performances as well as Eric's.
