Gategate
Or, a Morrisons Christmas for all

02/12/08
It never fails to amuse me that whenever there is a big scandal, the press like to ring-fence it by adding the word "gate" to the end of it.
This is obviously because the biggest scandal of the last 40 years was Watergate. What the press seem to fail to remember is that it wasn't called Watergate because it was some sort of scandal relating to water, no, that was the name of the complex in which this event occurred.
To be precise, The Watergate scandals were a series of American political scandals during the presidency of Richard Nixon that resulted in the indictment of several of Nixon's closest advisers, and ultimately his resignation on August 9, 1974, after his announcement in an address on August 8. The scandals began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Office complex in Washington, D.C. on June 17, 1972. This is why it was called "The Watergate scandal", simple as that really. You know, remember those days where you could refer to something by what it directly related to?
Now, everything is something "gate", from "Dianagate" to "Camillagate" and just the other day, I heard the Jonathon Ross/Russell Brand affair referred to as "Sachsgate", for fucks sake.
Journalism is just getting lazier and lazier, god forbid they ever report on a scandal properly, it is obviously far easier to add a gate word to it and then it writes itself.
I am secretly hoping for a naval scandal to occur, then we will have "Naavigate".

Talking of scandals, it was a real scandal when the BBC didn't make the third series of their classic (read rubbish) TV series of "The Tripods" in 1985. But never fear, Internet groups exist so you can meet up with other like minded folk who enjoyed the wonderful craft of "The Tripods" and not having sex with girls. Anyway, you will never guess what? They are finally releasing series 2 on DVD! To celebrate this, our friends at "The League of Freemen" will be having a launch party. This is very exciting. I will go and meet up with my hero Jim Baker, who played Henry. He was best. You would think that someone who was on TV over 20 years ago would be really bitter about not being on TV now and generally be obsessed with trying to cling on in anyway possible to this old programme, and you'd be right. Anyway, you have caught me out, I am a fan of "The Tripods" I suppose that makes me different to you, but hell, aren't we all different in a way? I am a big fan of the so bad it is good school. The school that made Rawhead Rex possible or Jaws the Revenge, not to mention Bullseye. Without any of these things, the world would suck a big one.

I was reminded today that it is only a few weeks until Christmas. Many people are excited about this (Not Wooly or Worths), but try getting the people of Peterlee in County Durham excited about Christmas, they have been given a rubbish tree.
I myself will be spending Christmas burgling Richard Hammond's house, as he will be in the North Pole having a long hair themed midlife crisis. I must say, it is certainly nice to see that whilst he is rich and famous, he would still degrade himself by shopping at Morrisons, which, as we all know, used to be Kwik Save in the south. Alan Hansen also seems quite happy with this, sat by a pretend fire, flogging spirits. But, I suppose with Money Aids the gripping the world, everyone needs every penny at Christmas, even very highly paid TV presenters.
It is a surprise to also see Nick Hancock and Denise Van Outen in there constantly shopping. That must explain why they aren't on TV anymore, they are always in Morrisons, fucking shopping, in Nick Hancock's case showing the man who sells fish how big his cock is with his hands.
