Alan Partridge and Other Less Successful Characters
Or, a night at the theatre

I am a fan of comedy. If something is funny, I like it. I was brought up on a massively broad range of comedy by my Dad. We would often listen to the Goons, Hancock and Round The Horne. We would also often watch old Will Hay films, which I still have a great fondness for, Carry On films, On The Buses, The Pink Panther, Benny Hill and Spike Milligan's Q. My Dad also liked most modern comedy at the time, particularily The Young Ones, Filthy, Rich and Catflap, Harry Enfield and Bottom. The comic strip was also popular in my house with "Five Go Mad in Dorset" and "Mr. Jolly Lives Next Door" being a massive favourite in our house. So much of this broad comedy influenced our house on a daily basis, you couldn't sit down as a family and watch anything without someone mentioning "the rickety chair." You could never have a fly come into the house without someone saying, "Why do you let so many flies in here, Neil?" You could also never mention the word "Tonic Water" without someone repeating it back to you (See Mr. Jolly Lives Next Door) in a Scottish accent.

Comedy was one of my major influences growing up and it was always (and still is) fun to find something new and unique. When Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer came along it was like being one of the apes from 2001 and seeing that monolith. I just thought they were amazing and just so unique from anything that was around at that time. Their "Smell of" series just got better and better. The slide however, began with "Bang Bang" and when "Monkey Trousers" appeared a few years ago, it was a sad occasion. They had seriously lost it (apparent by the fact that the programme was on ITV) and the whole programme wasnt far off resembling some horrible Russ Abbott show from 1991. I saw Vic last week on "Celebrity Come Dine With Me" He was embarrassingly awful to watch, like some really drunk uncle at Christmas who you wish would just go away.

Steve Coogan has always been a big favourite of mine as well. I personally feel that he is our generation's Peter Sellers, by which I mean, he is a versatile vocal performer and likes to create characters to disappear into. Like Chancellor Palpaltine,I have always followed his career with great interest. From Spitting Image, where I saw him appear on "The Word" doing loads of impressions that I thought were really impressive, all the way up to Saxondale.
When I heard he was touring, I snapped up some tickets as soon as I could.

So, last night, the time came. The wife and I went into Brighton and watched Mr. Coogan live.
Was it any good? Yes, it was OK. The first half was not too bad. It was Pauline & Paul Calf, Duncan Thickett and Tommy Saxondale. Whilst they were still pretty funny, it wasn't as funny as the £36 ticket wanted it to be. But, the second half started with Alan Partridge and it really underlined just how good and funny that character really is. Everything he said, funny or not, got an amazing laugh. He could have read out the phone book and everyone would have laughed.
Partridge is now a self help guru/life coach, with genuinely hilarious consequences. Later on the second half, Partridge puts on his play all about Thomas More, which is very funny, there is a scene with a Lute and a Chair that was just brilliant.
Coogan then finished with a musical number about him being "a bit of a cunt" which was just so funny.
On the whole, I really enjoyed the experience of seeing him live, but I can see where some of the bad reviews have come from, as I said before, the first half is the weakest part and if it wasn't for the sheer genius of Partridge, it would be a pretty average show. I would give it 7 out of 10.
Interesting to also note, that Coogan's lady helper in the show was Alice Lowe from Darkplace, which was nice, she is getting a lot of work lately, she popped up a lot in the last series of "Harry and Paul" too.

The new series of "The IT Crowd" started on Friday night too, it was pretty funny, mainly because of Matt Berry, he is such an amazing performer and I love the Douglas character. If only we could all react with such glee when we find our Grandfather's service revolver.
