|Looking back over the three years that I have been doing this blog, I seem to spend most of it complaining of being ill. Well, guess what? My latest entry is about being ill, again.
Last week, my wife and I went out for an anniversary dinner. The location of which was a Turkish restaurant in Worthing. The food was rather nice, it was a shame about the general ambience of the restaurant itself. I knew we were in for a bad meal when after we were seated, a family of loud, obnoxious people arrived (who clearly knew the owners very well) and sat in the booth table next to us.
Even though we had arrived five minutes before them, the waitress served them first (because she obviously knew them). This instantly made me angry. My anger wasn't helped by the fact that this family only seemed to be able to communicate via shouting. If you are a long time reader of this blog you will know (all too well) that I am a highly miserable so and so and if there is one thing I hate it is people who have no understanding or care for the feelings of other people. The dad of the family was a terrible arsehole. With every word that left his highly irritating face, my rage was climbing into my brain like a demonic Milk Tray man.
A small time later the younger son of the family arrived. He must have been about 18. He spent most of his time bragging about a girl he had been with who had big fake breasts. The father of the family thought this was amazing. From the way the son was telling this story and from the general unearned confidence that he carried with him like a big fake diploma, I took everything he said to be a total and utter lie. Rather than boasts, they came across like the desperate plea for attention that they were designed to be. Rather than ruining the evening for everybody with ears (and ruining my anniversary in the process) with your inept fantasies, why not take an overdose of pills like everybody else and be done with it?
It's people like this family that make life difficult for us all.
After our rather nice (albeit spicy) meal, we left suitably enraged by the arrogance of some people.
The nice part of our anniversary meal was that it was the first time since our son was born in January that we have been able to have a night out together.
The following day I felt a bit funny. I started off with feeling very full. Then as the day progressed I felt a bit more full and sick by the minute. I got home and just assumed that it was a hangover from the spicy food that I had the night before at dinner. I went jogging and it was like running in wet cement, dinner was a real struggle to get through and worst of all, I was off my tea. Late that night I went to bed with a case of horrible heartburn. I woke myself up at about 3am by being a bit sick. Which is never nice.
Friday morning I awoke at 5am feeling like absolute death. Nausea, aching bones, fever. I was violently sick (and I mean violently) and went back to bed. My wife brought me my laptop, some Lucozade and then took our son to her mums house and hid all day. I spent the whole day in bed watching episodes of Days That Shook the World and the Plinkett Star Wars reviews. In terms of entertainment it was a super day. In terms of being ill it was awful. I hate being ill.
With Friday written off, I woke up on Saturday feeling much better. I didn't have an appetite back as yet and didn't feel at all like being able to drink anything, but I could stand without it aching or hurting, so that was a bonus. We went to London to see my wife's heavily pregnant sister and her husband. As I was feeling relatively normal I decided to throw caution to the wind and drink some beer. I also had some curry for dinner. As it turned out, this was a bad idea. I spent most of Sunday feeling terrible. Bloated, sick and with horrible heartburn, but seeing as I wasn't actually sick, it wasn't that bad.
When I got up for work Monday morning I felt a bit more like I did Friday morning again. I decided to go to work anyway as I may feel better as the day went on. After a very nauseous car journey, I got into work and sat at my desk. Within a few minutes I knew I had made a mistake. I felt like I was about to be sick and had to keep dashing to the toilet. When I came back for the third time my team told me to go home before I gave whatever I had to them. So I went back home and suffered in bed, once again.
The only bonus to this nasty illness has been that I have barely consumed any food for four days. I am feeling a bit lighter and trimmer.
Did the Turkish restaurant give me food poisoning? Probably, is the answer.
Now Game of Thrones has finished, the object of our obsession is now the excellent Battlestar Gallactica. I totally missed it when it was on and a friend of mine recently leant me the first and second season. Watching all of these excellent US TV series only makes me mourn for a time when British TV was capable of producing such amazing TV. It wasn't so long ago that we were capable of making programmes such as GBH, State of Play, Edge of Darkness and Triangle.
People will argue that we have Dr. Who these days, but to me it isn't Dr. Who. It's shiny, loud and everything is shown. This is the exact opposite of what Dr. Who should be. Dark, moody and pulsing with imagination.
Bring back The Tripods I say. Make that third series BBC. Everyone would come back for it. It's only been 26 years. They are all still in fine shape. One even has his own bus.
My life as a journalist is ticking along nicely. Even though I have failed to earn a penny for it as yet, I am enjoying it immensely. I have been writing for over a year now and have interviewed three people of note. My first interview was with one of my teen idols Luke Haines (from The Auteurs), my second was with Neil Hannon and just today an interview I recently conducted with Richard Herring (another one of my teenage favourites) has gone live over at Sabotage Times. Read it now!

|- My inlaws live in a small town in Michigan that has a large Amish potilapuon. I thought it was funny that there was a hitching post for their wagons at the local Wal-Mart. My MIL has two Amish girls that work for her. They might dress Amish, but they are no more Amish that I am. They drink, smoke, use cell phones, take pictures which I understand is a huge no-no. One of them recently got married, so she has really settled down and settling into her Amish life. Rumspringa seems to be just an excuse for them to act like idiots. I know that they say it is so they can decide if they want to remain Amish, but the girls told me that it is very rare that people will actually leave. They don't want to be shund by their families and they have no one else. Okay..sorry for the book. I've been reading your blog for quite some time. I found it through Doris.|
