So, it ended. With one swift pull of a trigger, Raoul Moat popped the balloon of rolling news coverage. It was the first instance of rolling news coverage I have sat and watched live (as usually I am at work or not aware) and I am afraid to say I kind of enjoyed it.

I actually sat all of Friday night engrossed in the pictures. Even though the majority of the time I was watching repeat footage of a Police van reversing or live footage of an empty street with four police officers stood in a road. The adrenalin was flowing in the newsroom and the live "vibe" was electric. It was a bit like Comic Relief but rather than showing someone in a bath of bees, we had reporters standing speculating endlessly. In fact, rather than "Manhunt" being splashed across the bottom of the screen, it should have said "Warning : Speculation". Someone standing with a microphone in a street starting every sentence with "It is believed that..." or "Moat might have..." just does not seem like, in the grand scheme of things, news. It seems more like guesswork. In which case I could easily be a journalist. I can guess as good as the next Octopus.

The comedy highlights of the night were Sky News occasionally stopping and taking calls from residents affected by the siege. Each one that called sounded like dead ringers for the callers Alan Partridge would receive on a regular basis. They were deadpan, monotone and would only usually answer in one word. You almost sympathised with the people in the studio having to fill in the blanks while the elderly people called in to pass on observations and incidents that had already been long reported, well, that is apart from one man who felt the need to call and advise that Moat had stolen a tomato from his greenhouse.

The night carried on with experts in every field (seemingly that is apart from news reporting) calling in to give their two cents or turning up on the scene. Even Paul Gasgoine felt the need to attend, pissed out of his skull with some KFC. He claimed to be an old friend of Moat. Sadly, the Police didn't let him enter the cordon and perform what would have surely gone down in history as the most interesting negotiation in the world.

I still dont understand how reporters seem to think that they have some sort of magic invisibility function. They seemed almost outraged that the Police had moved them on from the area and that their magic helicopters were not allowed to hover above and film the last hours of a deranged man with a gun. Like he would look up at the sky, smile and be heart warmed by the gross intrusion. It didn't stop them though, they still managed to hide in bushes and sneak snaps of the intense interrogation as it went on.

I did not last the distance sadly. I went to bed about 11pm and missed the end. I was hoping that all would all turn out to be a frame job by a man with one arm. But it wasn't. It was him all along.

I am all for news, it is good. People should know about things, but only really, when there is something to report. Journalism these days seems to consist of speculation and the internet (which is actually both anyway).

It's an incredibly dangerous thing to do. That's two mad gunmen on the loose in the North of England in a month. What price on someone heading up to Holmfirth while they film the final Last of the Summer Wine series and taking out a generation of aging comics?
