Babysitting blues

The one way I can tell that I am really getting old is that I took delivery of a new shelf and was excited about putting things on it. I watched the first half of the Holland/Uruguay game and then, at half time I skipped as giddy as a school boy to my new shelves and filled them with CD's. They say it is the little things in life, but I seem to be working on a micro level.

I have started driving lessons again and my instructor this time is exactly what you expect a driving instructor to be (rather than the nine year old boy I had last year). He also has the appearance of a loveable vampire. He has slicked back grey hair and often wears a black shirt, it is a good look. Imagine if Dracula had decided that he would much rather devote his attentions to teaching people to drive, rather than living off of them for sustenance. That is him in a nut shell.

He is a big believer in catch phrases and I like that in my instructors. My favourites of his include "peep and creep", "drop that speed down" and "We'll take that gap". He also uses my name at every opportunity, almost like it is going out of style. Which is fine, once you get used to it. I would imagine that he is a very conscientious lover.

The only problem with my new instructor is, that I have no idea what his name is. Very much like an episode of Seinfeld or Curb your Enthusiasm, I worry that may turn and bite me at some point. He is simply in my phone as "driving instructor". I can vividly imagine a Seinfeld-ian emergency situation arising with me needing to tell someone his name and having to make it up. Oh what a wacky life I live.

Talking of whacky, we ended up watching "Adventures in Babysitting" last night. For those of you not aware of this classic 80's film, I shall explain. Mega 80's babe, Elizabeth Shue (Karate Kid, Cocktail, BTTF 2 & 3) is let down by her slimy boyfriend (who cancels their dinner date as his sister is ill) and ends up having to babysit for three kids. She then receives a call from her friend who is stuck in the city after an attempt to run away from home, so, off they all go to retrieve her and hilarity and adventure ensues. This film came out in 1987 and I was ten years old. The reason I mention that is that there is a scene in this film in which two rival gangs on the subway square up to each other. At the time I remembered them seeming fierce and threatening. The first thing I thought when I saw them last night was that they resembled an episode of the TV show Fame and were about as threatening as a gang of Gary Colemans (god rest his little soul). I was also surprised that the word "Fuck" is said twice in this film. Seeing as it is a Touchstone film (who are Disney in all but name) this seemed rather out of place. The one scene I remembered very clearly was Shue singing "The Babysitting Blues" in a blues club. It was nice to see the all black audience in the bar accepting the white middle class kids as soon as they showed a capacity to "sing da' blues". Before that obviously they hated them all. So you see, there is hope for us all yet.

I do so enjoy watching these old films from my youth with older eyes.

In more exciting news. I am off to see the exciting new moving picture "Predators" on Thursday evening (and Inception next week). I will be putting my review up on Culture Deluxe for the weekend. So make sure you tune in for that!
