Poetry in motion

It is very rare that television offers up something that you can both enjoy and feel intelligent by watching. The only actual example I can think of is Chock-A-Block.

But, last night, BBCFour served up "Ian Hislop's Changing of the Bard". This was a history of the poet laureate and how the role has changed over the centuries, from informing the people of the Monarchy to eventually informing the Monarchy of the people.

This was by far the most entertaining documentary I have seen in a long time.

Hislop has always been unashamed of his education and intelligence and that is commendable in my opinion. Personally speaking, I like to lord it up over people I know who are stupid and I have only 1% of the education and knowledge of Hislop, so, if I were him, I would be smug. In fact, I would probably be worse.

Poetry for me has always been a closed door. Whilst I appreciate songs and song writing, Poetry has always been something I have considered to be a bit, well, you know, effeminate. I realise that makes me an idiot, and it is always something that I have often sought to redress.

After all, the older I get, word-play and good use of of the English language has become something that really appeals to me. Just hearing last night, the way poets such as Alfred Lord Tennyson pirouette their way around the prose just made me smile. Also hearing how an article in that days paper about the Charge of the Light Brigade inspired that classic poem -

Half a league, half a league,
  Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns' he said:
Into the valley of Death
  Rode the six hundred.

'Forward, the Light Brigade!'
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldiers knew
Some one had blunder'd:

The newspaper article that inspired this poem made mention of "valley of death" and "blunders" and all of the factors that inform the poem. It was fascinating to how his mind worked and which phrases and words particularly stuck in Tennyson's mind.

Great work Mr. Hislop. It was nice to see that the BBC still have one giant baby who plays by the rules, unlike Adrian Chiles who has announced that he is going to the television graveyard of ITV. Good move, bozo.

I just find these behind the scene snatches of history fascinating, and at the same time frustrating. Now I am 32, I love learning. I seem to have an insatiable thirst for it, but when it mattered, when I was at school, I couldn't have cared less. That is where the frustration comes in. But, now I am older I am able to buy a book I want to read and do what I like, so up yours 12 year old me, you are stupid, live with your parents, have no money and are probably watching a VHS and playing on an Amiga. Check me out, I have a wife, a house of my own, a PS3 AND an Xbox 360, a 40" HDTV, Sky HD with surround sound and more Blu Rays than you. Yea, I said, Blu Rays, look it up on the internet, what? You don't know what the internet is? You idiot. Stop crying, stupid.

By way of an election update, I noticed an advert last night for "Sky News HD leadership debate, coming soon". So, I switched to the Sky News HD channel and was greeted by a countdown meter with dynamic music. It said "The Sky News DEBATE. In High Definition - 1 Days : 20 Hours : 12 Mins : 39 Secs - Coming Soon to channel 517". Is this kind of, you know, over the top? I can't wait to watch it tonight and see if it's changed.

As I type this, the sky is once again full of lovely Aeroplanes and air traffic is up and running again. All in the world is well once again.
