A Holy Trinity

I think we all have moments in our life in which we discover a whole new world of music that we had previously dismissed.

When I was 21, I was going out with a girl who liked Kate Bush. I promptly took every opportunity to squeal “Heathcliff!” at her and laugh whenever she would mention Kate Bush. I had never listened to any Kate Bush you understand. I just knew her from occasional viewings of the “Wuthering Heights” video as a child. As far as I knew, she was an odd woman who sang in a high pitched voice and pranced around in a leotard.

Then, on a long car journey, my girlfriend, obviously tiring of the crap I was putting on the car stereo, suggested she put on the Kate Bush album “A Kick Inside”. I resisted obviously, but in the interest of fairness, eventually relented. This after all, was a fair relationship at times. I took her to see Titanic (shudder) so I could see Godzilla (Double shudder).

She put the tape in the stereo (I know, tape!) and the first track “Moving” came on. From that moment, I was a Kate Bush fan.



This album transfixed me. Each track blending into the next with an almost haunting quality. I remember getting home and making her come into my house so I could tape (I know, tape!) it .

I then listened to the album over and over again for weeks.



Obviously, my friends had the same reaction as I did originally and probably still do. After all, I had a bad reputation for liking shit music at the time. I had recently got a copy of the Sparks album “Propaganda” and took great pleasure in torturing my friends with selected tracks from the brothers Mael. Especially this one –



If you don’t stop and examine Kate Bush, you would have that initial diagnosis and probably stick with it. Sure, she does tend to prance around in leotards a lot, yes, she does have a shrill voice, but once you get over that, you are in a world of velvet and honey.



I can’t recommend A Kick Inside enough. It really is a perfect album and the closing song is just beautiful.



The follow up album “Lionheart” is also very beautiful and I recommend thoroughly.

The funny thing is, up until this point, I had not really been a fan of female singers. My tape (I know! Tape!) Collection was 100% male vocalists. But, after “A Kick Inside”, my ear changed. It was like when I started playing bass, suddenly; in every song I could hear the bass more than anything else.

So, after listening to Kate Bush over and over for a while, I discovered a new obsession. Aimee Mann.

Around this time, I saw the film “Magnolia” and I really enjoyed it, but what I enjoyed more, was the soundtrack. The director/writer of the film, P.T Anderson, wrote the film to Aimee’s songs and then incorporated them within the movie. Even using some of her lyrics in the scenes (“Now that I’ve met you, would you object to, never seeing, each other again?”) to great effect.





The director even famously had all the actors sing along with one of her songs in a scene. This is a beautiful scene and just works so perfectly. It stops the film for three minutes and lets you watch as each character reflects on their lives. A perfect marriage of wonderful film and song craft.



The album “Bachelor No. 2 or, the Last Remains of the Dodo” by Aimme Mann, is another perfect album in which every song could be a single. This is the album in which the lion’s share of material from Magnolia ended up (Though I would suggest getting the Magnolia soundtrack as there are more on there). From the first track you are just hypnotised and drawn in by the wonderful melodies and words. I defy anyone to listen to this album and not enjoy it.





So, they were my two favourite lady singers. Bush and Mann. The two queens of my world.
But, I think I can now add a third. Fiona Apple.
I had heard Fiona Apple before; she did a truly beautiful version of “Across the Universe”.



But last night, bored, I decided to investigate further and I bought her album “Extraordinary Machine”.

It is like a wonderful combination of Mann and Bush for me. It is melodically beautiful and also has that eccentric quality.



So, I absolutely love it.



It is exactly the kind of album that appeals to me. Wonderfully eccentric and wonderfully haunting. She has a beautiful voice and is a fantastic song writer. I recommend heartily and I am enjoying more on every listen.



We now have a holy trinity and I will be seeking out her other work.
