Dead Happy
Lennon's On Sale Again

05/03/10
In 2004, Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) remade the seminal George A. Romero classic, Dawn of the Dead. I enjoyed it very much, though it adopted the 28 Days Later approach by replacing the "zombies" with "infected" that could run around like mad bastards and bite you, rather than walk towards you like Peter Stringfellow on a dance floor in the original. For a time, I got it into my head that the remake slightly edged out the original in terms of events and action.

Oh how wrong I was.

Yesterday, I took delivery of the new Blu Ray set of the 1978 Dawn of the Dead. This lovely set is replete with 4 inter changeable covers, 3 cuts of the film (Theatrical, Directors and Argento) and some lovely posters and booklets. Whilst the transfer wouldn't blow you away, the film most certainly does.

It's been a while since I watched the original Dawn of the Dead. I was always more of a fan of "Day" than "Dawn". It always seemed much scarier to me. The world is overrun with zombies and a small band of people are effectively trapped underground, their only hope lay in making daily helicopter reconnaissance missions to see if there are any living people around and catching zombies to pass to the in-house scientists to conduct experiments to see if they can be "domesticated". Which of course, they can't.

The sense of isolation, despair and futility, even as a 10 year old watching it, is palpable. Not only are they totally fucked, but they are also stuck down this mine with mindless twats with guns and itchy triggers.

In my mind, when growing up, "Dawn" was much more of a light-hearted take on the genre. More of a comedy than the other two films. To me, "Night" was a film of the times, the 1960's being a decade of social upheaval and conflict. "Dawn" touched on commercialism, with the dead returning to the shopping mall, "Some kind of instinct. Memory, of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives."
"Day" focused on the Military interference and paranoia/mistrust of the Reagan era.

After re-watching "Dawn" yesterday, I was struck with just how good it is (Watching old films through much older eyes is becoming a rewarding new habit these days) and just how unsettling the alternate world is. Where as "Day" spells it out to you, "Dawn" is all about the subtlety and makes you think. Also, it would be cool to live in a shopping mall, but how quickly would you fold, and where would you go?

The special features were very interesting too. "Fan of the dead" is a great insight into what the cast mainly do now. Going from convention to convention making geeks happy. Pointing out where they were killed or where they killed someone. How it was done and a photo of them doing it. There was even a space at the table for an autograph from "Zombie who gets Machete in head".

So, to conclude, the remake is nowhere near as good and the original is an unsurpassed masterpiece.

Day of the Dead comes out at the end of the month in the same kind of boxset, I look forward to renewing acquaintances with that beauty.

Sean Lennon has come out to defend the use of his father in the new Citroen adverts. "Having just seen the ad I realize why people are mad," he wrote. "But the intention was not financial."

But her 34-year-old son defended his mother, saying she was merely "hoping to keep dad in the public consciousness".
The ad, he said, meant "exposure to the young". "Not many things as effective as TV," he continued.

Bollocks. There are much more effective ways to keep Lennon's exposure high than a car commercial. There was recently a film about a young Lennon, almost every 2 years another version of a Lennon best of is released, Beatles albums were recently re-issued, a Yellow Submarine film is in the works and this year is the 30th anniversary of his death. I think they are probably better, and more importantly, more tasteful ways of keeping Lennon "out there". I am sure if you were to ask Lennon as to what he would like to see advertised, he would much rather have his name attached to "War is over" and not " The new Citroen DS3".

After all, it's not very rock n' roll to advertise a car, never mind when you have been dead for 30 years. Just ask Ringo about integrity, oh, actually, don't.

I look forward to George Harrison advertising Kit Kats soon.

I was sad to see the unveiling of the new Ernie Wise Statue today. It is utterly appalling. He looks like a mermaid. He very much resembles the Tony Hancock comedy sculpture in "The Rebel". Oh dear. Poor little Ern.
