BBC 3, your time is up

Have you ever looked at the nightly schedule for BBC3?

If so, have you ever felt that at least one of the programmes would be worth watching?

There are amazing programmes such as "The Worlds Hardest Driving Test" in which a woman that used to be in SMart (before that man hung himself) and Will Mellor (Bongo, or what ever his name was, from Hollyoaks) compete driving giant vehicles and passing a test. If this programme was on Channel 5 you could excuse it, well, actually, what am I saying? No, you couldn't excuse it, you would strongly believe that the creative minds behind the entire channel were bankrupt and running on fumes (or at the very least sniffing them).

There was also the unforgettable "My life as an animal" in which people would literally live like an animal. The sight of someone on their hands and knees pretending to be a pig with other pigs is something you would only usually find in a documentary about the dangers of excessive LSD abuse, but no, this was prime time on BBC 3. They didn't even go the whole hog (no pun intended) and have the animals mate with the man or woman to see if a hybrid animal baby was born, like in the Fly II.

It seems that BBC 3 is sailing worryingly towards the choppy and shit waters of becoming an exclusively reality TV channel.

In the past, BBC3 mainly consisted of new comedy. Programmes such as Fun at the Funeral Parlour, Little Britain, Swiss Tony, The Mighty Boosh and Mitchell and Webb were regular features. At some point, some idiot at the BBC decided that BBC 3 should be all about "Da youf" and began scheduling accordingly. Now, it would seem, BBC4 is the place for comedy and you are much more likely to find something new on BBC2, just like the old days.

BBC3 has become an embarrassment of a channel and is actually making ITV 2, 3 and 4 look high brow.

Anyway. The point of this rant is that the BBC have announced that they are cutting two radio stations and a high percentage of web services in order to redeploy the money into new programmes.

The two radio stations are 6 Music and the Asian Network. Whilst I don't claim to be an expert or an avid fan on either radio channel, I do get the odd podcast from 6music (Adam and Joe, Stephen Merchant, Collins and Herring).

I can't say my life would be over or effected if either station were to go, but my point is, that rather than remove to perfectly functional and good radio stations, why not get rid of the utter shit that is BBC3?

I am sure less people would care and it would probably save far more money.

They are also saying that they will be cutting down on imported programmes and sports. So, no more Mad Men, The Wire etc.

So, the castration on the BBC is ongoing and it is only a matter of time before the Robocop 2 nightmare I discussed previously in this blog.

In brighter news, I watched Fantastic Mr. Fox last night. I thought it was lovely. Like most Wes Anderson films, it felt like a warm hug from an old friend. If you are a fan of any of the previous Wes Anderson films, you will love it. It looked great, the music was great (Including a great Jarvis Cocker song) and the voice cast was just totally note perfect.

Michael Foot died today. The first politician (other than Thatcher) that I was aware of when I was a kid as I found his Spitting Image puppet really funny, but obviously his death isn't.

I would scrap BBC 3 as it is shite (apart from Mad Men) BBC 4 has some amazing Music documentaries (the recent Latin ones were amazing)...BBC6 is an important station that shouldn't be scrapped...(over the last few years its listenership figures have gone up 12% per year)...most stations would give anything for figures like that!!
