Radio Times
Tonight a DJ saved my life

17/02/10
I don't know about you, but if someone were to say "local community radio" to me, I would instantly imagine an elderly retired man sat in front of a microphone telling you about knitting patterns, dog mess on pavements and the car boot sale this weekend behind the scout hut.

But tonight, I learnt a valuable lesson. The proof is in the eating of the pudding.

Tonight (From 6 until 8)I listened to my friend Ian's and his co-host Andy's radio show on Glastonbury F.M.

This was as far removed from the aforementioned retired man sat in front of a microphone telling you about knitting patterns, dog mess on pavements and the car boot sale this weekend behind the scout hut. This was really enjoyable stuff and I recommend it thoroughly.

A bit of background. I first met Ian in 1997 at a call centre in Watford. Ian was one of the team leaders in my area and made that shitty job a great deal of fun. Occasionally I would have to work the 12-8 shift, which was really crap. I remember the England vs. Argentina game from World Cup 1998, Ian, myself and a few others were stuck at work and missed the beginning. That game was not the game to miss the beginning of. By the time I got to the pub to join my friends, it was already 2-2, and it stayed the same until those horrible penalties.

Anyway, I digress. Ian was fantastic fun to be around and was one of the few people at work that had been a Reeves and Mortimer and Eric Morecamebe fan, so there was never a dull moment. I realise that this all sounds lame, but they were bad, dark and miserable days of seemingly endless phone calls and hassle, so, when you work with someone who makes you look forward to coming in to work the following day, that person sticks with you for life.

He was also someone I missed when I left that shitty job. This was back in the days when if you lost touch with someone, that was your lot. In fact, one of the reasons I am thankful to Facebook is for reuniting me with lost friend gems such as Ian. He is also a regular visitor, supporter and comment leaver on this very website. For which I am always grateful.

Ian is also the MAN, when it comes to music. So, when I found out Ian had his own show on radio. I was IN.

The radio show tonight was fantastic. Like lying back in a warm velvet bath of quality music, with some great chat and trivia poured in like a lovely audio radox.

It was certainly amazing to hear this piece of greatness again...

There was also some brilliant Northern Soul and a feature based around the debut Portishead album, "Dummy". Which is always so nice to hear. Also, Stevie Wonder, and I am such a sucker for Stevie Wonder.

It was great to be hearing local radio being handled so proficiently. It certainly made me jealous as that is something I have always wanted to do. I did try Hospital Radio once, but I was paired with a total and utter bell end who just played "world music" and was so pretentious he stood out in Brighton, so I left.

So, well done Ian and Andy, a brilliant show, I shall be listening next week and I suggest you all do too. Also, thanks for the great shout out on air and Wings song.

I am off to Berlin tomorrow. I will be taking my laptop and I will be reporting whilst there. So look forward to German themed posts over the weekend.

Until next time, Auf Wiedersehen.
