A National Treasure
Ah, Palin

15/01/10
When I was a nipper, my favourite Python was John Cleese. I would watch him in anything, even Clockwise (The most stressful film ever made).

As I have got older, and perhaps wiser about the mechanics of comedy. I have realised that the real genius in the group, the person who really gives the most joy and unadulterated pleasure in his silliness, is Michael Palin.

The reason I write this is I recently finished reading his second diary "Half way to Hollywood". Whilst many may offer that they find Palin boring in real life, I dont.
I feel like he is our nation's lovely uncle that you just love to hear from or see.

His diaries are just so nice to read. Obviously, I bought the first one for some behind the scenes Python insight. When I finished it I was more interested in Palin than the Pythons.

The second volume really serves to underline just how good Palin is. I had no idea that he wrote Time Bandits, which was one of my favourite films when I was little.

The 1980's were such a rich decade for Palin, in terms of filmmaking. Time Bandits, The Missionary, A Private Function and A Fish Called Wanda. All basically classic British films. Not to mention that he turned down any involvement in Yellowbeard (A genius decision, terrible film) and was almost going to be in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (The part eventually went to Michael Caine).

I am looking forward to the next diary and reading about his many adventures.

Ah, Palin. He really is a national treasure. I say a knighthood is in order.

John Cleese on the other hand has gone right down in my estimations over the last 10 years or so. Ever since Fierce Creatures it seems the John Cleese that we knew (A Fish Called Wanda, Fawlty Towers) is no more.

He has been in some utter shit of late, too many really to mention. The Pink Panther 2 is worth a mention. Cleese plays the part made classic by Herbert Lom, Chief Inpecter Dreyfus. With his classic ticks and nervous giggle, that part was pure gold.

I haven’t seen The Pink Panther 2 but I am willing to put my house on the fact that Cleese does none of this, just as Kevin Kline didn’t in the first one.

John Cleese knew Peter Sellers and even worked with him in The Magic Christian (which was also shit by the way). At any point during filming, do you think that John Cleese sat there, watching Steve Martin murder yet another classic comedy creation and felt proud?

Do you think he was significantly artistically challenged? No, it was purely for the money, which seems to be the only driving force behind Cleese's every choice these days. I suppose that it is to pay off the numerous women he has married and then divorced. Silly sod.

Don’t even get me started on Eric Idle; he is my least favourite Python. He is just ALL about the money these days, which is a shame.

When you watch the original Python series; Idle was something of an enigma. The only Python to write alone and also a really great performer. He had a great gift of delivering long rambling monologues and also was very adept at playing the slimy characters or wide boys (I'm only pullin' your leg, crucifixion really!).

Rumour has it that he wanted to do a sequel to The Holy Grail a few years ago, even though Graham Chapman had been dead for a while.

So, he decided to write a musical around it and made MORE money. I hear he is writing a musical based on The Life of Brian, so, it would seem that until he shuffles off this mortal coil, he will not be stopped trying to milk the Python cow (George Lucas seems to be the same these days with Star Wars).

It must be also noted, that he also did a sequel to The Rutles using left over footage from the first one...Need I say more?

Still, it's good to see that neither Gillliam or Jones have sold themselves to Hollywood. Which they could have quite easily done.

Gilliam can hardly raise money to make films and seems to be avidly avoided in some Hollywood circles. Jones is always a joy when he pops up on TV with his historical programmes.

I often wonder just how fed up the Python team must be about answering the same questions in interviews over and over again. I saw something recently about their 40th anniversary. They were all on an American chat show and the interviewer asked the same old questions that you hear them asked all the time.

George Harrison used to say that the same force that was with the Beatles (in terms of innovation and creativity) was with Python (The Beatles split around the same time Python formed) and I think there is somthing in that.

Talking of The Beatles. The Hallmark channel were showing a biopic they had made about John Lennon the other day. The man playing John Lennon had obviously only ever seen the John Lennon in Forrest Gump. It was awful. He looked and sounded nothing like him.

I wonder if there will be a Python biopic one day?

In other news, Iain Lee has left Twitter due to the amount of abuse he received regarding "The Persuasionists", a new sitcom about an advertising company he is in that started the other night on BBC 2. Apparantly the abuse has been relentless. I must say, it was absolutely terrible and everyone involved should kind of be a bit embarrassed. If you missed it, you are lucky.

But to be honest, the abuse shouldn't really be directed at Iain Lee, but the writer.

Adam Buxton was pretty bad too, he is lucky he hasn't got a Twitter account.

Most new sit-coms are often compared to previous greats. If I had to have a go at comparing The Persuasionists to anything else, it would be the 90's CITV childrens sit-com "Spatz". The show had a childrens TV style of delivery. Everything was fast paced and everyone was a total caricature. I really couldn't believe it was on BBC 2.

Anyway, at least it's Friday. The weekend is nearly here and time to sleep.
