Those of you who know me, or know of me, or have read this blog and think you know me, or have spoken to someone who may have read the blog and mentioned that they knew me well, or you overheard someone reading a blog that may have been mine and may have thought to yourself that you know me, you, well, the point is, I like recommending TV shows that you may have missed or just plain not heard of.
Well, today is no different, for last night I finished watching the first season of the wonderful HBO's new wonderful comedy series "Eastbound and Down".
Eastbound and Down stars (and is written by) king of the "Hey, it's him from that"(After Bill Hader) Danny McBride.
McBride stars as Kenny Powers, a former professional baseball pitcher, who after a disappointing career is forced to return to his hometown middle-school in Shelby, North Carolina as a substitute physical education teacher but immediately finds that he is not as respected by as many people as he once was. He is also unable to accept that he is a washed up drug addict with serious personality defects and is determined to make it back to the big time, anyway he can.
Powers moves in with his brother Dustin (John Hawkes) and his family and begins to ruin their lives and their house. He then thinks he can pick back up with his high school sweetheart April (Katy Mixon) but discovers that she is engaged to the high school principal (Played brilliantly by Andrew Daly). This only makes Powers more determined to get the girl, but not using traditional means (turning up at the school dance high on Ecstasy and dancing erratically until he pukes all over the floor) to win her over. He also manages to cast a spell over the school music teacher Steve (Steve Little), who, so besotted with Powers, takes a drink driving rap for him and becomes his new (With a touch of insanity) assistant. The trouble is, Powers' once famous pitching arm of over 100 miles an hour, is now no more. The years of drinking, drugs and high living have robbed him of his abilities. Kenny cant do public appearances any more as they will ask him to throw a pitch and doing so would reveal his decline to the world.
One such request comes from local BNW dealership manager Ashley Schaeffer (A brilliant Will Ferrell) who subsequently becomes the nemesis of the piece.
Danny McBride plays Powers with such an elegant swagger and downright arrogance that you cant help but love him. He is also deeply visibly flawed. For instance, when Powers needs to get into shape, there is a montage with suitable "getting into shape" music. You then see Powers do a couple of weights, sit down looking exhausted and inject his arse with steroids. That is the kind of man he is. A legend.
Whilst it is not a show that will have you crying with laughter, you cant help but love Kenny Powers for being the ultimate horrible, shitty, down right awful, but memorable, anti-hero.
I am excited to hear that a second series is on the cards. I cannot recommend this show enough, it is very good and yet another slice of genius from HBO!
"So that is why I am better than everyone in the world. Kiss my ass and suck my dick, everyone." - Kenny Powers audio book, "You're Fucking out, I'm Fucking In."
