The remastered love of my life

Like the perplexed and open mouthed Monkeys of 2001 (The film not the year), I took possession of a giant black monolith last night. The only difference being that where as the Monkey's Monolith enabled them to progress through the medium of technology and evolution. My Monolith enabled me to listen to all of the Beatles albums in Stereo and remastered to a 2009 standard.

My love of The Beatles started from a very early age. My parents would often listen to the Red and Blue albums on car journeys and I loved the Yellow Submarine cartoon as a nipper. When I started to get into music in my teens, I started to become obsessed with The Beatles. It's thanks to them that I started playing guitar. I bought an acoustic guitar and the complete Beatles guitar book.

I memorised every song, chord and lyric. To this day I still have the almost alien-like ability to remember how to play every song. I then moved on to bass guitar. I was obsessed with learning all of Paul McCartney's bass lines. Dear Prudence was the holy grail for me. What a bass line that is. Just amazing. Simple, yet so brilliant. McCartney, for me, is the best bass player that ever picked up a bass.

I didn't know what to expect when they announced that the Beatles cannon was to be remastered. I suspected that the difference would be negligible and that it would all feel like a £170 con. But, I was pleasantly surprised when I listened this morning on my Ipod.

The first thing that hit me was the clarity of some tracks. "I don't want to spoil the party" began with a guitar part that I had never heard before, but there it was. Next "Misery" came on from the "Please, Please Me" album. You can really hear that it was recorded live in the same room, instruments bleed into each other via the microphones and you really feel like you are in the room.

There were a few tracks I was keen to track down and see how the now sounded. "Savoy Truffle" from the "White Album" in the 1987 remastering always sounded undermined, too quiet and condensed. It is now clear and at the same level as everything else. It still isn't a wonderful song, but it's great to hear it sounding so clear. "Wait" on Rubber Soul really sounds crisp and lovely. I could go on. But that would be boring for me, you and the ghost of Ceri Seel who watches over us like Mother Mary.

It is just the clarity of this new mastering that really amazes though, you can hear everything and the sound just sounds like there is so much space to breathe. Where as the 1987 remastering sounded so flat in comparison. Especially the early albums (pre Pepper) which now sound like new.

My initial impression is that "Beatles For Sale" is so far my winner in terms of overall improvements, it sounds like a new album and each strum, thud and bass line sound like they were recorded yesterday. Obviously, there are a few that don't really sound that different. But they are mainly contained on the first couple of albums (Though I am yet to listen to everything).

The packaging is also really good, although they are digipack CD sleeves, they are very much given the look and feel of the original vinyl, thus adding to the special feel of the whole thing (Blu Ray re-release companies take note, put the original artwork on the cover!!) by having all the original pictures and artwork in place.

The only downer is that the DVD of mini documentaries that was also in the set is the "Beatles on Record" documentary that BBC2 showed Saturday night. Thanks BBC.

The timing of this arrival was perfect. Since Sunday morning, my right ear was infected and blocked. It has been so boring and annoying only hearing out of one ear. It has really made life miserable. Luckily, last night it finally cleared and I was able to enjoy the fab four with both ears.

Talking of the fab four, I went to a car boot sale at the weekend to buy me some old vinyl. I found "Rubber Soul" for sale for four pounds. Not only was it "Rubber Soul" but it was also the French import. I checked online when I got home and it seems to be worth more than four pounds. I saw one website saying it was worth £65. Take that you stupid record selling man at the car boot sale. If you are reading this, I am coming back this Sunday, could you have some more rare records for me to buy off of you for next to nothing please?

I also had my life taken over recently by the brilliant "Batman : Arkham Asylum" Which is my excuse (I am full of excuses) for not blogging all of last week. I completed it Saturday morning and then spent the rest of the weekend in limbo. It has been a while since a game has taken me over like that. The last one was Fallout 3 and I had to stop playing that as I was becoming Howard Hughes (in a bad way).

I am 32 years old.
