Gearing up for my weekend back to Watford. I am actually genuinely excited about seeing the old place again, even though I couldn't me more happy that I don't live there anymore. It is, like it or not, the place where I grew up from 1983 until 2004. 21 glorious years of progress.
I would love to see the glorious high street again. Starting with the highly bizarre statue of the Hornet outside of McDonalds. Then on to the odd Millennium statue which looks like a Transformer's cock. The ubiquitous Harlequin centre, a shopping mall like no other. I mean, like every other. The fountain by the overpass, the sprawling pubs, clubs and bars and the majestic pond at the top of the high street.
There was many a night out in this high street, many a day out as well. I remember getting really drunk for the first time when I was at college and falling into the thorn bushes outside of the Spectrum centre. I went home with cuts all over my face and woke up the next morning with no idea how they got there.
I feel like Richard Burton probably did when he returned home to Wales. Apart from the fact that he was successful, handsome and famous.
Don't forget, Watford has had its share of famous notable persons such as Elton John, Terry Scott, Tim Lovejoy, Superhans from Peep Show, Geri Halliwell, Mo Mowlam, Bradley Walsh, Vinnie Jones and of course, Nick Leeson. I am easily as good as any of them, so I am in good company.
It will be a real pilgrimage and I will try and take pictures and post them up next week of my adventure up to the town twinned with Mainz, Nanterre, Novgorod, Wilmington and Pesaro. I am sure you will all be as interested as I would be in the reverse roles, but hey, my life is like a box of chocolates.
Still reeling from Shooting Stars last night. I re-read my blog this morning as I went to bed thinking maybe I had been a bit harsh. But, I don't think so. It was bad. It had none of the charm or feeling of originality of the original programmes.
Before I forget, my friend, ex-boss and sometime HB collaborator, Ian Lythaby, presents a weekly show on Glastonbury FM (107.1) every Wednesday at 6pm. You should listen as there is not much this man doesn't know about being funny or playing great music. I am trying to talk my way into getting a job on his show as a member of his posse or a funny comedy character, like Deaf Ken, who is deaf. Or Toodles, the Scottish snooker champ. Not forgetting my classic comic creation, Dr. Pippin Bipp M.D.
I really am this generation's Phil Cool.
Anytime you want to get me on the show Ian, I will perform any of these characters for an outrageous fee.
