Imagine the scene.

You have invited your favourite uncles round for the evening to entertain you.

They were always such good fun weren't they? They would walk into the room and instantly disarm all in sight with their shared senses of humour and irrepressible charm.

The table is set, you prepare to laugh just like in the old days, you begin to wonder what wonderful delights they have stored in their armory now. But, tragically, just like with everything else in life, there really is no going back.

Your uncles arrive, look flabby, too rehearsed and bark old catchphrases with such O.T.T. hysteria that you start to think they snorted half a rhino horn on the way in. They also bring the same old gang in tandem who in turn seem bored with life.

Yes folks, those uncles are Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, and Shooting Stars returned, with a whimper.

I was a massive fan of Vic and Bob growing up. They could really do no wrong. "Big Night Out" was nothing short of genius, "Smell Of" the same. "Bang Bang" had its moments, but it was quite hit and miss.

This is when the rot had began to set in.

They returned in 2004 to ITV, with "The All Star Comedy Show". I knew this programme would be shit, it was on ITV and I don't think ITV has produced innovative comedy in my lifetime. It really shouldn't have been shit however. It had a great cast, Reece Sheersmith, Jane Horrocks, Steve Coogan and Vic and Bob. But shit, it was.

One sketch that sticks in my mind as being really bad, was Jane Horrocks playing an old woman who (in a recurring sketch) would go to different shops and ask for a form of produce, like a sausage and two eggs or something of that ilk, and then look at the products when handed to her and proclaim, "My late husband". This is shit. Really shit. Then there was the character played by Vic, who was basically a mentally ill man in a ginger wig who would convulse and say the words, "Monkey trousers" and whistle. The joke was that women found him irresistible.

"The All Star Comedy Show" was so bad, that ITV gave them a series, called "Monkey Trousers".

The mentally ill man in a ginger wig who would convulse and say the words, "Monkey trousers" and whistle, returned. It was in each show and was like watching "The Passion of the Christ", by which I mean someone you hold dear being beaten for no reason for a long time.

How could this have been written by the men that did this :







I could never have imagined a time back then in which Vic and Bob would become yesterday men or seem steps behind and just so stale. That time has fully arrived now, with a vengeance.

I was never a huge fan of Shooting Stars in its previous guise, I liked the initial questions round and the clip round, but I would rarely watch the final challenge round, it got on my nerves a bit.

Watching the new Shooting Stars this evening was a painful experience. Vic and Bob just looked too "going through the motions" to make it an enjoyable experience. All the jokes seemed far too rehearsed and the new line up just didn't fit in my opinion.

Angelos Epithemiou is the new permanent team member on Ulrika's team. I would presume that he is funny outside of the show and picked to give something different and left field, but he had very little to play with and just came across as someone with genuine mental health issues who had wandered in from a Variety Club coach party.

Matt Lucas was again in attendance as George Dawes and much like Little Britain, proves that familiarity breeds contempt.

The whole saga reminded me of when Morecambe and Wise went to Thames in the early 80's. Whilst it was nice to see them again, the magic just wasn't there and they just looked old and embarrassed to be performing such shite.

Vic has always reminded me of Eric Morecambe (which I am sure he would enjoy as he has previously imitated Morecambe in various end of shows)but none more so than tonight and their Thames TV days.

It is a shame, but I think I have come to terms with it now.
