Or making a dream a reality with Basil Soper

When there is often a humongous world changing event, there is often the need to do a vox pop from relevant observers and insightful onlookers. I don't know if you knew, but Barrack Obama became the 44th President of America yesterday (or today?). It certainly is a week for change, what with David Tennant also stepping down from the Tardis and Joaquin Phoenix announcing he is quitting films to concentrate on his music career, good luck with that weird face.

Many prominent black celebrities have had their say about this amazing achievement. I heard Jessie Jackson on the radio this morning in tears making some fantastic comments (Now we see many whites choosing reason over race, hope over fear). He, like all black people in America, will feel this more than anyone, it was only 40 years ago that Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated, and he could only dream of holding the highest office in the world.
Spike Lee also said some wonderful comments (It's a great day, it's a beautiful morning, a new dawn, a new beginning - not just in America but the world over) It really is one of the most significant events that the world has witnessed for a long time and I for one feel privileged that I was around to witness it.

Appropriate then, that after all the highs and the magnitude of such an epic event still sends ripples around the world, that the BBC asked Ricky Gervais for his thoughts. Gervais said, "David Brent would vote for Barack Obama. Definitely. He'd love to be on the side of the fact this could change the American landscape." Which to me, is the vox pop equivalent of doing that dance. Why moan about people always mentioning David Brent and then bring him up when asked about the new President of the United States? If they ask John Cleese what he thinks would he do the silly walk or say that George Bush is a dead parrot? well, yes, he probably would is the answer, especially if there is a few quid in it for him as he seems to have genuinly no shame in his advanced years. Eddie Izzard gave his twopenth as well, something about jam I think.

Today also saw the passing of Michael Crichton. I can only hope that nature will find a way to bring him back. By using frogs balls we will have him back in no time. In all seriousness, his body of work, or "cannon" if you will, is outstanding. He wrote some fantastic stuff, Westworld, The Andromeda Strain, Jurassic Park, E.R, Congo, Twister , The Great Train Robbery, Airframe and not to mention Rising Sun with Sean Connery, a very fine rubbish film, no one says Fuck Off like Sean!

So, who will be the next Dr. Who? Personally, I hope that it is Basil Soper, the man from "The Personal Injury Helpline" adverts. He would make a great Doctor, just what kids need, a rotund and flabby Doctor who likes cakes and making money on the side from work based injuries. Mind you, I don't know why I care as I haven't watched any of the new Dr. Who since it came back with that miserable one with jug-ears. I hope that Basil gets the job, he would be amazing, imagine him trying to get out of the Tardis? If they make Basil the Doctor (I say if, I mean when) they should make his assistant the woman from the Ocean Finance advert. The Master could be played by the Skelington from the Scotch Video Tape advert. There, problem well and truly solved.

I like the way the Skelington from the Scotch VHS advert is watching a video tape in 2021, ha! Stupid people from the past, they didn't even know about DVD, ha! What a bunch of fucking idiots people from the past are. It makes you want to go back in time and point and laugh at them, especially in those old films where people go to the moon for a holiday in 1981, twats, I was around in 1981 and we could barely get a bus. You will have to go a long way to find someone as stupid as someone from the past, which as you read this includes me, fuck. This means I am no better than a Skelington that watches VHS tapes in 2021. I knew it.

In all fairness to Gervais, he was directly asked "who would David Brent vote for?" so it's not like he brought the subject of Brent up or anything. Nice blog though. I don't need to watch the news now.
