Me Vs My Grandad

The year was 1998. I was 21. I was still living with my parents house. I was in bed asleep at midday. There was a knock at the front door. I woke up, and went to answer it, I was half asleep.

It was a man from British Gas. He was here to read the gas meter. I let him in, we chatted about nothing. I had the look of a man coming out of a coma. The gasman asked me where the meter was. I pointed roughly to the kitchen. He looked around for a bit and couldn't locate it, he asked where abouts it was. I told him I thought it was behind the fridge. At the time, the fridge was in a very awkward corner of my parents kitchen and it took both of us to manoeuvre it out. Obviously, whilst this was happening we entered into more chirpy banter, all the while I was becoming more and more awake. We finally moved the fridge out and there was nothing behind it. The gasman asked again where the meter was. It was at that moment, I remembered we didn't have gas, we were electric. When I told him this, he looked very annoyed and left almost immediately. I was left to move the fridge back in place and feel rightly ashamed.

When my granddad was 21 he was in the army and fighting for our freedom in World War 2. I cant imagine that he would be asleep at midday or not know his house wasn't supplied with gas. I can imagine that he knew how to kill a man with a bayonet and how to strip a rifle in a minute. At 21 I just about knew how to make a hot meal and hadn't really worked a day in my life.

There is an aspect of shame being a modern man. It is no wonder that most men seem to be in a constant battle to find ways to express their masculinity. Our grandparents fought in a war and had national service to contend with. Our parents had the struggle against the system in the 1960's and the battle against the establishment. Our generation is the generation of spoilt brats in comparison. We have so much freedom of choice and so much power compared to say, someone of my age in the 1930's. We are also a cynical generation, we dont accept facts at face value and have the internet at our disposal.

I cant think of anything that is not on the internet. For instance, I watched the Werner Herzog film "Grizzly Man", in which a person who was mentally ill, lived with Grizzly bears once a year for 13 years and filmed everything he did. The sound of his own death was recorded on camera (When he was....yes, eaten by a bear) and the person who inherited his camera played the sound to Werner Herzog, who was visibly moved. The new owner of the camera said that it would never see the light of day and no one will ever hear it. I wanted to test that theory, so I looked on Google, and there it was, just like magic.

Even journalists are now getting all their stories from the internet. If Watergate were to happen now, Woodward and Bernstein would have only found out about Watergate from reading on the internet, and a week late.

I never knew my granddad, and that has always bothered me, as I almost did. He died one month before I was born. I never got to meet him and he never got to meet me. It always plays in the back of my mind as I am always told what a funny man he was and how great he was to be around. He was from Sunderland and I have always wondered what he sounded like, as the rest of my fathers family are all from London. But, I will never know, though I do have lots of pictures, so that is something I suppose. I also have an amazing picture of my great-grandfather taken from the first world war. One day, I hope to become famous enough so that the BBC will pay for me to find out more about my family and do all of the leg work.

I am on disc 2 now of The World At War, hence my current World War 2 obsession. It really is an amazing piece of work. Laurence Olivier has a voice of velvet and I cannot wait to get through more at the weekend.

You think your grandad's generation had it bad? Back in the American Civil War the southern states had to take up arms to defend their right to eat fried chicken!
