Context
The "new offenders" of standup comedy?

28/07/09
Context is a funny thing. You can take anything out of context and make someone look or sound terrible.

Like the editors on reality television are able to take situations and show them out of context to suit their needs.

Before the advent of television and video editing equipment, journalists had been utilising this technique for a long while.

As an avid listener to the Collings and Herrin Podcast. I am well aware of the irony Herring employs in his humour. He will often make statements that when taken out of context would sound awful. But there in lies the rub dear readers. In context, Herring becomes a vessel and mocks exactly the kind of people who would take such jokes out of context.

Sadly, that is just what has happened.

In his piece entitled "The new offenders of stand up comedy" Brian Logan illustrates perfectly on how to miss the point.

Logan says, "This year, veteran comic Richard Herring is sporting a Hitler moustache for his show, Hitler Moustache, in which he argues "that racists have a point". But, as Herring himself argues in his blog, "It is true that I do utter those words, but it is followed by a smart and interesting routine about our attitudes to race and ethnicity and then about 40 minutes of me railing against the BNP and encouraging people to stand up to fascism because human beings are all the same and shouldn't be judged by their race, gender or sexuality. But by not mentioning any of that then it inevitably makes it look like I am seriously examining whether there's something to racism, rather than taking a belief that is opposite to my own and then examining it in order to demonstrate its invalidity. Logan hasn't seen the show, but I told him enough about it for him to know this. To ignore that is a misrepresentation of some magnitude."

This is irresponsible journalism on an almost Phillip Glass degree and action should be taken immediately by the Guardian to withdraw this piece as soon as possible and make the appropriate apologies.

The upsetting fact remains that Herring, and the other comics taken out of context in this piece, are now tarred (Ironically) with the racist brush. With the Edinburgh Comedy Festival just around the corner, this is the last thing they need, and may seriously harm their ticket sales.

If you want to hear the truth about Herring or indeed any of the comics mentioned, why not see a show, in context. I am sure those of you in any doubt of Herring's ethics would be pleased to find it is all done in the right way and rallies against and makes a total mockery of ignorance and prejudice.

This is a good place to send any complaints.

In other news, I watched the Martin Bashir/Michael Jackson interview last night. I didn't watch it when it first went out, so the only facts I had were taken from Bo Selecta! I had heard that Bashir made life uncomfortable for Jackson, but it struck just me how much it wasn't an interview. It was sensationalist clap-trap. Bashir asks Jackson a question about his past that quite rightly, he a)doesn't want to answer and b)doesn't want to dwell on. Bashir takes this as an opportunity to dig deeper and put Jackson on the spot and, at times, make him cry. Whilst I agree that this method of interview is effective with politicians and the like, with a man who is clearly mentally ill, it comes across as bullying. I felt more sorry for Jackson in that documentary than anything else. Bashir to me, seemed like a camera man at a car crash, rather than assisting, he was seeking the gore shots.
He had his rabbit in the head lights and just put his foot on the gas.

It just all felt distasteful. Jackson was obviously just being a child. Coming over all shy when he was pushed about his dancing (like a kid at Christmas) and showing off in a posh shop about what he owned.

My PC still hasn't got a delivery date. Fuck.

I do not believe him to be a racist. He says himself in his comments about Murray's landlord that people can miss the irony of these performances and take them literally. He also says it is not the performers fault. I disagree with this, if the 'ironic racism' is not said then the harm cannot be caused, the speaker is surely responsible for his words and any harm they may cause. Is it really worth it to put across a message as obvious and unchallenging as 'racism is bad'? Surely that doesn't make an audience think?

But isn't he laughing at racists, rather than being racist?
Comment By: Dermot, 04 Aug 2009, Rating: 5/5

I read the Logan article and disagree with you. Racism is unacceptable, even if you are doing it to be 'ironic' and make people think. It should certainly not be a source of comedy. It's cheap, it's easy and it's certainly not intelligent. Fuck you Richard Herring!
